How to Support a Friend

Amy Law, Community Support Volunteer, & Robyn Tosczak, Coordinator, from the Anti-Violence Project

This workshop helps participants develop skills so that they feel capable and confident supporting their friends in times of crisis. We provide a model for empathetic communication and give participants opportunities to practice in a safe and supportive environment.

Peer Discussion: The Power of Your Story

Dan Kerr, former Pride Chair

Come by to chat with some of your peers, or just come by to listen.  This is a safe space for people to tell their own stories about challenges they have faced in their lives, or things people are in the process of overcoming and working through.  Having a space to talk about your own life and feelings can be very empowering for some people, and here is a supportive atmosphere for peers to discuss and share their thoughts and feelings with each other.

Let's Talk About Sex: STI's & Sexual Decision Making

Jennifer Gibson, BA, sexual health educator, Island Sexual Health Society

  • seven of the more common STIs are discussed, including their transmission, treatment, consequences, and prevention
  • different decisions we are faced with regarding our sexuality and sexual health
  • reasons people chose to be sexually active and reasons people chose to be abstinent (and what's the difference!)
  • activities for negotiating intimacy, assessing risk behaviours, intoxication and sexual activity
  • influences of personal values, peers, partner, media, substance abuse, etc.
