What's this all about?

Uvic Unity is an overnight retreat involving a bunch of interactive presentations and workshops designed for youth who want to help make a difference in our world.  It will you better understand and identify with the ways you can be a leader in your community, by better understanding the social issues and attitudes of the people around us -- and it will also introduce you to a bunch of really cool, open-minded people.

We will also introduce you to the other advocacy and service organizations at UVic, and help you better understand and feel comfortable with campus life in general. And we will be sure to keep things fun along the way, too!

You intrigue me. Tell me more...

Unity focuses on educating you about some of the personal, community, and advocacy issues that affect both society and queer persons today.  We have a bunch of workshops, and they are each facilitated by persons from local community & campus organizations, including:

  •  Uvic's Equity & Human Rights Office
  • Outspeak! Youth Empowerment
  • UVic Counseling Services
  • UVSS Women's Centre
  • Anti-Violence Project
  • UVic Pride
  • Island Sexual Health Society

(Check out our schedule and presenter's pages for more info.)

You'll also get the chance to give a short presentation, to let us know what is something important to you. And if you're creative, you can help with the production of a theatre presentation or some awesome art projects (posters, buttons, "gay agendas") that are going to be put into use in some BC schools and at UVic itself.

Who all's invited?

Uvic Unity is open to all mature youth of high-school age, of all sexual orientations and gender identities.  This means we want everybody to feel safe and accepted  - gay, straight, queer, trans, lesbian, two-spirited, unlabeled... and everybody else you can think of.  It is also open to those of all racial and ethnic identities, those differently-abled, those of any or no religion, those embracing a label for anything or nothing at all... so long as you are a respectful and accepting individual, you're invited!

If you're involved in your school's GSA (Gay/Straight Alliance), student council, leadership, multiculturalism & social awareness groups, or any other kind of community organization,  that's great and we really encourage you to attend.  But if this is your first leadership experience, that's just fine by us, too.  Enthusiasm is most important!

What's the cost?

It costs $15 for high-school-aged youth to attend.  That gets you Sat & Sun meals and two night's stay in a residence dorm at Uvic.

Uvic Pride (& hopefully some others!) is sponsoring everything else - your food, supplies, presenter fees, resources, entertainment, even a flying monkey!

We want everyone to be able to attend, though, so if you are worried about finances check out our student policy manual - section 6.

I'm sleepy. Please wrap things up.

That's all!
